Career Compass

Charting a course ...

I have created this website for the benefit of those friends & family who are charting a new course, looking for a new job. This site contains the knowledge I have obtained from various sources and from my recent job hunt a few years ago. May it serve you well.

Personal Inventory

Perform an inventory of your career assets to determine what you have to work with, before doing anything else.

Changing Careers

Career changers do have options besides going back to school. The skills you presently possess may be re-purposed for use in another industry or position.

Networking: the Power of People

More than half the people searching for new jobs find them through Networking.

Resume

The purpose of your Resume is to secure an interview, not land the job. It is a "brochure" where you sell yourself and your assets.

References

Plan ahead and you will have a team of supporters ready to sing your praises to any prospective employer.

Coverletters & other Correspondence

Don't let your Resume do all the talking. There are other opportunities to highlight your many assets and show your future employer that you are the right person for the job.

A Word about Security & Identity Theft

In today's era of identify theft it is important to safeguard your personal information. This is especially true when uploading your resume and related documents to the internet. Many unscrupulous people are visiting these job websites (ie: monster, career builder etc) and collecting detailed personal information about people.

Please keep the following tips in mind when sending out your resume and references:

  • Do not include your full street address or zipcode on your resume (only city & state) - same for your references
  • List your cell phone # instead of your home phone# if possible - your home address could be gleened from your home phone #
  • Make sure your phone/answering machine message does not volunteer any info about you - only confirm the phone #, do not confirm name, address or existence of any other people at that number
  • Do not post your reference sheet on the internet - provide printed copy at time of interview or email directly to employer when requested
  • Do not include any other identifiying information on your resume and related documents - ie: social security#, driver's license# etc
